Civil War Re-enactment Brings History To Life

Last weekend, visitors to Picton Castle Gardens were transported back nearly 400 years for an unforgettable Civil War Re-enactment and Living History weekend.

On August 9th and 10th, The Marquess of Winchester’s Regiment of the English Civil War Society returned to re-stage the dramatic siege of Picton, filling the gardens with the sounds of musket fire, the beat of drums, and the excitement of battle.

From the moment the gates opened, guests stepped straight into the 1640s. The Military Living History camp offered a fascinating glimpse into life during the English Civil War, with authentic displays, period costumes, and engaging demonstrations. Visitors could meet soldiers and civilians, watch weapons drills, and even try their hand at children’s military training, which was a hit with younger history enthusiasts.

The day’s schedule was packed with action, starting in the morning the Exercise of Arms showcased the skill and discipline of Civil War troops, followed closely by the first round of kids’ drills. By midday, anticipation built as participants prepared for the highlight of the morning – the dramatic Assault on the Castle Door. The siege was brought vividly to life and was thrilling to watch.

After the excitement of battle, guests were invited to witness the Royalist Commander dining in state at in the afternoon, which was a fascinating window into the customs and ceremony of the period.

Music lovers were treated to a spirited “Drum Jam” after that, where the rhythm of Civil War drums echoed through the gardens. The afternoon offered more drills, more fun for the children, and plenty of time to explore the camp before the Living History village closed.

The atmosphere throughout was electric, providing a perfect blend of entertainment and education. Families, history buffs, and curious visitors alike were drawn into the stories of the people who lived, fought, and endured during one of the most turbulent periods in British history.

As this was a fundraising event for the Picton Castle Trust, proceeds will help support the ongoing preservation of the castle and gardens.

With sunshine, spectacle, and a true sense of stepping back in time, the reenactment weekend was a resounding success, and a reminder of just how powerfully history can come alive when brought to life by dedicated enthusiasts.
