The Picton Castle Charitable Trust

Since 1987 the castle and gardens at Picton have been owned and managed as a charity. The Picton Castle Charitable Trust (Charity Registration No. 1211167) is responsible for maintaining and restoring this unique part of Welsh heritage, providing public access to the castle and its collections, and supporting education.

The charitable work of Picton Castle Charitable Trust is to:

Conserve and restore the castle and gardens.
Providing public access to the castle and gardens, including access to exhibitions of the unique collections of fine art, rare books and antiques, original to the castle and collected over many centuries.
Promoting education in the arts, heritage and culture, including specialist exhibitions and gallery displays on different aspects of the history of the castle and its inhabitants.
Supporting recreation and welfare with the intention of improving visitors well-being and conditions of life.

Restoration of the castle

Restoration of the castle will be a multi-million pound project. This work will enable public access to areas currently unsafe and ensure that this wonderful house, with its rich and important history, is protected for future generations.

Many of the upper rooms of the castle are currently derelict or semi-derelict, the roof needs considerable work, as do the walls and windows. This is a large-scale project that is likely to take time to complete.

In the meantime, we are actively raising funds for a smaller restoration project that we hope to complete in the near future: the restoration of the Muniments Room.

This delightful little room is just off the library and still has its 18^th century wood panelling. In medieval times it would have been used for storing important legal documents, hence its name.

We welcome donations on site or online, which will be put towards our restoration work.

Volunteering

Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do at Picton Castle & Gardens; their time, energy, and passion help to keep the castle accessible and open to all.

Picton Castle’s history is still ongoing. Volunteers work to preserve the heritage of the building but also play a vital role in securing the future of one of Pembrokeshire’s most cherished castles.

We are always looking to expand our volunteering team and have vacancies in the following areas:

Have been to many NT/RHS and other places, but Picton was way up there with the best!

The castle/house had a great feel to it, you could almost live there, very homely.  Garden was very well kept and we liked the general layout and especially the herb beds.

Restaurant food very good as well

The castle has a very homely feel, unlike some stately homes. The staff were all really friendly and helpful.

There's a good tea shop and the gardens just go on and on. The plants are all in great condition, so if you are a garden fan or enjoy photographing interesting specimen plants, then this is a perfect place to go. You'll need at least 2-3 hours but could easily enjoy 4-5. There are both formal and informal planted areas - plus a woodland walk we didn't have time for.

There's a maze plus a wild board-walk and structures to keep kids amused.
